Hemochromatosis: being a silent disease, controls are vital

It is an excess of iron in the body. It is a disease that is usually silent, which is why check-ups are essential

Hemocratosis is a hereditary disease, it results in an excess of iron in the body that ends up damaging the liver, heart, and pancreas. It can lead to cirrhosis, irregular heartbeat, and even cancer.

It is a disease inherited from both parents that affects the metabolism and causes too much iron to be deposited in the body.

How to detect it: The main symptoms in middle age appear little by little. They can be diabetes, tiredness, heart failure, joint pain, memory loss and sexual desire, impotence, abdominal pain, and tan or gray skin.

The advantage that this disease has, despite its silent behavior, is that, as it is hereditary, if it is known that one of the parents suffers from it or has suffered from it, the corresponding check-ups must be carried out through blood tests, genetic testing and in some cases biopsy.

How to treat it: The aim is to reduce the amount of iron in the blood, and a needle is used to drain blood from a vein in the armthey . If the person has cirrhosis, which is one of the symptoms, it is important that they be checked to rule out liver cancer by performing an ultrasound every six months.

There is also a medicine to expel iron from the body through the urine or stool that is taken as a pill or by injection.

What to avoid:
Alcoholic beverages to protect the liver.
Iron supplements since the body does not need more but less.
Raw fish and shellfish.
Vitamin C supplements because they increase iron absorption.
