Finding a good-paying job that keeps the lights on and ensures you can pay the rising rent in Boyle Heights is difficult without training or education. East LA has many great resources that you can use to be eligible for these better-paying jobs.
The opportunities in East LA include:

LA Trade Tech
LA Trade Tech, LATTC, is a community college that offers affordable academic programs and a career/employment center. A good option for anyone already working is to join the Cooperative Work Experience Education program that allows you to:

  • Apply for jobs and internship opportunities
  • Learn to create resumes

CalWORKs is available, and it is a welfare-to-work program that helps with job training, job readiness, and education. Vocational and career technical education are offered through LA Trade Tech.

East LA Occupational Center
The East Los Angeles Occupational Center is a great resource that can help you follow academic programs or job training programs. Two of the most recent programs being offered include:

  • Anesthesia technician
  • Google Information Technology

Financial assistance is available, and there are additional programs that include but are not limited to:

You can also enter a high school diploma program that allows you to receive your diploma if you don’t have one. The training for this program is free of charge and a great option for adults that want to reach this important milestone.

East LA Skills Center

The East LA Skills Center has many careers training and course options to help you land a better-paying job. You’ll be able to choose from a variety of career options, including:

  • Graphics design
  • Video production
  • Building and construction
  • Energy and power
  • Health
  • Medical
  • Office
  • Service

The programs often include high-demand skills meant to help you find better employment opportunities through job training. There is financial assistance offered and opportunities for anyone with a disability or a veteran.
Classes are available at the East Learning Center and the East Los Angeles Skills Center.

Boyle Heights/East LA Work Source Center
Open 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. The center is a great resource that offers free services to those in need. Adults, veterans, homeless and those trying to re-enter the population can go to the center for:

  • Free job training with access to workshops and computer access
  • Career guidance and placement assistance
  • Skills to help you write a resume and build your interviewing skills
  • Referrals for employment

You’ll also find that there are customized job listings and placement options available. The WorkSource Center is a strong resource for anyone who needs a job fast or needs to sharpen their resume and interviewing skills.
All of these resources can help you enhance your skills and start on your way to a new career that offers better financial compensation, benefits, and job security.

Puente Learning Center
Puente is an organization that provides courses and educational proposals for all ages, with or without prior knowledge. From preschool to summer camps; help get young people into college; and adult education programs, with information in Spanish and English.

El Centro de Ayuda
El Centro de Ayuda provides Los Angeles adults, both displaced workers, veterans, and the homeless – through the American Job Centers Workforce Investment Act Program – access to:

  • Free job training, telephone, and computer access, and literacy skill workshops
  • Employment referrals
  • Unemployment Application Assistance
  • Customized job matching, placement, and listing via CalJOBS
  • Resume and interview skills building
  • Career guidance and program placement assistance
  • Prioritized program placement in the construction and health care industries
